Although I gotta say around the time I saw the film I was such a huge Ford fan that I was literally biting my nails because I was worried his character could die.

The actor being Harrison Ford notwithstanding, I found that I didn't care enough about the character to worry whether or not he would survive. Maybe the (albeit supposedly cheesy) voiceover would have helped me develop more of a connection.

But yeah, there is not even all that much happening actionwise.

And what was up with the unicorn? I suppose it may hint that Deckard is actually a replicant and Olmos' character is aware of his programming, but that's all I can come up with to explain it, and that would bring in quite a few other plot problems, if true.

That is the common interpretation, yes. The dream sequence was missing in the theatrical version (which also had a voice over by Ford all detective-style: "Sushi, that's what my wife used to call me" etc. That's the version I saw the first couple of times so I won't ever say that sucked, but considering Scott didn't even want it in there...), but Olmos putting the little paper figure there was always in the film.

So the origami unicorn was there, with no connection to anything else in the film, other than the pre-established fact that Olmos' character likes origami? Interesting.

What plot problems would you see if Deckard was a replicant?

Planned obsolescence was the first issue I thought of. I don't remember if they specified if only certain replicants would die after 4(?) years, but how would a replicant rise to become one of the best blade runners in such a short amount of time? Does future LA not do background checks? I would think that they would do the test on anyone applying for such a position. Or, they knew all along he was a replicant and that's what they use as Blade Runners. Kind of conspiracy-theoryish, but that could explain it.

Deckard is also considerably weaker than the other replicants in the film. If he was a replicant, why was he so easily outmatched?

Anyway, those are two that come to mind right away. There may be explanations for them, logical or otherwise.

Perhaps I set the bar too high after hearing all the great reviews; maybe I just bought into the hype. Maybe it really is a great movie. I just don't see it, and I really don't have any desire to try again. And I wonder, how much did Coke pay for that product placement?

Hmm, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people who see it for the first time these days felt that way. Thanks for your opinion, though!

After all the praise for the movie, I was a little worried about what reaction my opinion would receive. I'll keep my flame-retardant suit on for now, just in case. (-:,`

P.S. The "NSSP" is implied.

Of course, [Quixote] carried it a bit too far. He thought that every windmill was a giant. That's insane. But, thinking that they might be...
