Although sometimes the series just begins too with no pilot per se.
They do things differently, since they are a cable operation and don't need to take the vagaries of network programming into consideration.
So they make a pilot for internal consumption only, the suits see it and if they approve they commission the show and broadcast the whole thing at once.
The networks tend to air the pilot publicly, get feedback, and then say yay or nay.
But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...

Pilots are aired all the time in the US weeks to even months before the series begins.
