Shutter Island (2010) ironclad Send a noteboard - 27/02/2010 11:39:01 AM

Scorsese teams up with his current favorite actor DiCaprio again for this story of an 1950s investigation on a far off island housing the criminally insane. The director pays homage to a couple of old horror films from that era, both in art direction, lighting and camera work, setting up a pretty eerie atmosphere. Of course, the plot soon follows to get pretty trippy, including dreams, flashbacks, mysterious events. Approaching the last third of the film, nothing's certain anymore, and that's more than anyone should spoil about the ending.
Overall a very satisfying movie experience, both as thriller and psychological drama. The cast is excellent with great names like Ruffalo, von Sydow and Kingsley. The film could have been ten minutes shorter, it's not exactly fast either, some dialogs are excellent, others feel a bit artificial. But it lives off it's unique atmosphere and the knowledge that there is more to the case than meets the eye. It's definitely a film that you will want to see twice to check for the hints that may have helped you see the solution coming. Recommended.

7 out of 10 spooky lighthouses.

I'd like to discuss a couple of things with people who've already seen this, so let me know what you thought.

This was unimaginative, ridiculous and obvious, with zero suspense. - 01/03/2010 07:48:07 PM 498 Views
