I share a lot of his views (though I'm slightly less vocal about it, for better or worse ), and I enjoyed the movie. In my opinion, whether someone will enjoy Avatar depends almost entirely on their tolerance for the preaching of exactly the themes you (Alf) listed. If they make someone angry, they won't like it. If they can get by the story though, they'll find a very cool movie. All the cash thrown at it was used to good effect, and the 3D version is little short of amazing. It's not the best movie in the world, but it's definitely at the very top of a few categories, and for that, if nothing else, it should be seen.
It actually reminds me of Final Fantasy games, in that respect. They don't always have the best storylines out there, and they're certainly not as deep as some. They don't even have the best graphics, come to think of it. Still, there's no other series in the world that can wow players with so many different aspects of itself. The average gamer might not consider every installment a favorite, but they know they have to play it just the same. Missing out is like missing out on a piece of industry history. If you haven't played Final Fantasy, then you haven't really experienced that year in gaming, and I feel roughly the same about Avatar. Is it the best? No, it's not. But it's big, it's impressive, it broke records, and it's something you should see.
Meh. I didn't explain that well.

Serious comment, or an exaggerated joke about Avatar's ridiculous budget?

Didn't he also shell out a hundred mil or more for advertising? Was that included in the amount? *NM*

From my understanding about a third of its cost was also marketing. *NM*

Especially with so many people seeing it in IMAX. Those tickets generally cost $5 or so more. *NM*

Worth seeing on the big screen. Just don't expect Citizen Kane. *NM*

No. It's not good at all. It's an 'experience'. That aside it's distinctly average. *NM*
