Technically it was brilliant, the story was nothing amazingly original yet engrossing and its themes and plotlines deeply resonated with myself: Environmentalism, corporate greed, new age spiritualism, racism and colonialism, sustainability, space exploration and alien contact; etc. The characters were fairly cliche, but again I still didn't care because they were archetypes that I could either love or hate. The world-building was deep and fantastic, the music was wonderful, and visually it was an excellent experience. Particularly the flying sequences, which like Miyazaki, I have a soft spot for. The battles were appropriately epic and sweeping, and the tragedy appropriately impactful.
I've seen many better, more deep and thought-provoking storylines in cinema. More honest characters and complex narratives. Does Avatar deserve all its accolades? No, perhaps not. But it has proven to be a film that can widely tap into popular consciousness, and for that perhaps it does.
All that being said, I don't expect you to like it. But I still recommend seeing it.

Serious comment, or an exaggerated joke about Avatar's ridiculous budget?

Didn't he also shell out a hundred mil or more for advertising? Was that included in the amount? *NM*

From my understanding about a third of its cost was also marketing. *NM*

Especially with so many people seeing it in IMAX. Those tickets generally cost $5 or so more. *NM*

Worth seeing on the big screen. Just don't expect Citizen Kane. *NM*

No. It's not good at all. It's an 'experience'. That aside it's distinctly average. *NM*
