Will you be able to love the movie without the book? YES. I do not at all thing this movie requires the book. I hardly think it will end up being wise to compare them at all.
Will you have the shame teary joyful nostalgia some will have? No. And you can't get that just by reading it now.
Do I recommend you read the book anyways because it's an awesome little kid book?
