I think Lost had a good season, then lost steam much like Prison Break and BSG because of the "making it up as we go along".
Hence - Season 2. All the characters introduced in S2 are already dead barring a few very minor ones. And Jack's Army ?
Ones they sat down and figured things out it's been getting better and keeping a steady high IMO.
The only good to come from S2 was the character of Ben Linus, and that was pretty much random luck.
