1. What is your favourite classic TV sitcom (by "classic" I generally mean anything before 2000 and the reality TV/medical drama/HBO-ization/cable dilution of the market phenomena)? Why?
Married w/ Children. It was different in that it was a family who was "Sanford and Son" poor and almost no one on the show had any respect whatsoever for anyone else. It also had some cartoon-level, physics-defying slapstick. Plus, it could be damn funny.
2. Who is your favourite classic TV character? (Not necessarily from the same sitcom as above)
Steve Rhodes.
3. Do you like watching re-runs of old TV shows? If so, what are a few you like watching?
Yes. I like watching just to enjoy how different things were in earlier eras. It doesn't really matter which one. Hell, I got caught up in an episode of "Bonanza" that was a blatant rewrite of "12 Angry Men" the other day. I love old TV.
4. Do you own any TV sitcoms on DVD? If so, which ones?
Just sitcoms? Hmm, I haven't really had the money to buy all the ones I'm interested in... but I think I have managed to get a season or two of Night Court, The Office and Scrubs.
5. What decade would you consider the "golden age" of the sitcom?
Probably the mid-80's to mid-90's. If you really want to split hairs, the Golden Age was probably during the era of shows like "the Honeymooners" and "I Love Lucy", and my first sitcom was probably "Three's Company" (I was born in 1975), but I didn't really enjoy watching so many until the mid-80's when shows like "Night Court", "Growing Pains" and "Mr. Belvedere" started.
6. Laugh tracks - irritating or bearable?
They had their time. Unfortunately, that time is no longer today. They're quite bearable if I watch an older show, but I can't tolerate their presence in new shows. Kelsey Grammer's show Hank had one, for instance, and it is the only new sitcom that failed in ABC's new 2-hour comedy block on Wednesday nights (the other three shows do not have a laugh track and are doing well).
7. What sitcom did you hate the most and why?
I don't think I hated any that I can remember. I either enjoyed one and watched it or didn't and didn't.
8. What character on a TV sitcom irritated you the most and why?
Seven from Married w/ Children. That little kid who was a new character they had for awhile before he just vanished. His every moment on screen is excruciating.
9. Which evil twin or brother/sister did you like best and why?
I'm going to step out of sitcoms and say either Dark Willow from "Buffy..." or Garth from "Knight Rider".
10. What spinoff do you think was the best? The worst?
I think I'd have to go with Frasier for best.
Probably Joey for worst.
