So...Observers saved Walter and Peter 20something years ago at a frozen lake. What more do we already know about this? Walter surely knows quite a lot about our bald friends. Maybe Peter is not from the mirror-verse but, like Christine in this episode, became "important" because an Observer died for him, just like the one did for Christine. Maybe Peter is "saved".

I think this is how it happened: remember Season 1's finale episode, with the dimensional portal being opened above a lake? That was the same lake that Peter fell through, and I'm willing to bet it was during the winter time. Walter opened up a portal above the frozen lake, went through, kidnapped the parallel version of his son, and came back, but the ice of the lake cracked and they both fell through, forcing the Observer to save them.

What I didn't get was why the assassin's ammo hurt and ultimately killed the Obs when the guard's in the beginning didn't.

Th Obs has the ability to manipulate time, and was seen catching the bullet flying toward him, as seen through a slow mo'd video surveillance capture. However, at he and when the assassin shot at him, the Obs didn't do anything to save himself.
BOHICA - Go ahead, ask me what it means.
