I'm not even sure I would call that a continuity error but just bad bad writting which is why I no longer watch the show and no one else should either.
From what I saw of season 3, he doesn't even need to look at brains to take peoples' powers. So he just likes peeling open skulls, I suppose?
Of course, that's assuming any of the other writers even saw that episode. Which, after watching the first half of season 3, I'm not even remotely convinced of.
Since when does he have the power to look through bones? If he does have that power, then why does he need to cut open skulls to look at the brains?
