Third, I hated the message. That relationships are either working or not working, and there's no sense of "working" on it to make it better, or sense of time spent with someone having value if you're not "soulmates."
...I don't think the movie made the point that Tom wasted his time with Summer, since she didn't turn out to be his soulmate. The point was: each relationship makes us what we are, gets us a little wiser, experienced. I doubt that Tom regret having met her but there just was no way to "make it work" between them. It wasn't meant to be.
But of course, disliking Summer's character already makes it kinda hard to make it through the film
