Massive interview with Rick Berman on 18 years of STAR TREK Werthead Send a noteboard - 01/09/2009 01:06:56 AM
In the linked interview, TV producer Rick Berman talks abot his time as executive producer on STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, DEEP SPACE NINE, VOYAGER and ENTERPRISE, not to mention his duties on the movies GENERATIONS, FIRST CONTACT, INSURRECTION and NEMESIS.

The interview is huge, three hours or so, but quite fascinating. Berman has had a rough ride from the fans over the years, particularly over VOYAGER and ENTERPRISE, but he comes over well in the interviews. In particular, he acknowledges the problems with those two shows and agrees that there was way too much STAR TREK produced and put on the air: he calls it 'franchise fatigue'. Berman defends the creative decisions on both shows as he didn't want to keep repeating TNG ad infinitum, so doing a show about getting home and then doing a prequel were valid choices.

Potentially far more fascinating is when they go right back to TNG and the casting of that show, such as Gene Roddenberry really hating Patrick Stewart in the role and even forcing him to wear a wig for the studio audition, which Stewart bore stoically. Rick Berman is also a bit smug when he reports how Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) and Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) both quit the show to pursue other careers and both wanted to come back within a year, which proved difficult to accomodate.

There's also some nice tidbits I hadn't come across before, like the cool relations between Jeri Ryan (Seven) and Kate Mulgrew (Janeway) on VOYAGER, or that LeVar Burton (Geordi) was really annoyed with his visor and kept pushing them to get rid of it, which they finally did in the films.

So, good stuff if you have a whole afternoon to plow through it. The attached article has bullet points of the more salient points for those in more of a hurry
