Re: American Network TV... Who is Doing Well and Who Needs More Viewers Browncoat Emma Send a noteboard - 09/10/2009 11:02:11 AM

First it was FOX's "Glee" and "The Cleveland Show", now CBS has given full season orders to "NCIS: Los Angeles" and "The Good Wife" which have become the two highest rating new Fall dramas of the season.

I liked the premiere of Glee, but haven't had a chance to see the newer Fall episodes. I'm having trouble getting into the Cleveland Show because I hate the voices of both the sons.

Haven't seen "Glee", "The Cleveland Show" or "The Good Wife". I saw a few minutes of "NCIS: Los Angeles" and I think that's enough for me.

Ranked second among all primetime programs behind only its predecessor, "NCIS: Los Angeles" is averaging 17.47 million viewers and a 4.1/11 rating in adults 18-49. 'Wife', starring Julianna Marguiles, is averaging 13.70 million viewers and a 3.0/8 rating in adults 18-49. The show consistently wins its time period in all key measures each week.

On the whole networks are giving their new shows a little bit of breathing room to flourish it seems with only one outright cancellation so far ("The Beautiful Life" ). New shows also looking likely to get full season orders are "The Vampire Diaries", "Modern Family, "Cougar Town" and "FlashForward".

FlashForward I like. Only one from the previous two paragraphs I've tuned in for.

I don't even know what "The Beautiful Life" is. The first episode of "The Vampire Diaries" seemed too much like a teenage soap opera (and a crappy one, at that) and...well, it was just disappointingly bad. "Modern Family" has its moments. It's not my favorite show, but I'm watching it for now. I can't decide if I'm just puzzled over "Cougar Town" or I really kinda like it. "Flash Forward" is on at a bad time, so MAYBE I'll try watching it online at some point (no DVR, boo hoo...lol). I have to watch my "Bones", so I'll gladly give up whatever else is on in that time slot. :approve:

More on the fence are several of the new sitcoms including "Hank," "The Middle" and "Community" which all need a few more weeks to play out but are looking likely to get the full season order.

It's a bit weird seeing Zoe (Jordan Hinson) from Eureka playing a different character (and regressed in age back to 15 again) on Hank. Strangely, not so weird seeing Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) in a very non-Frasier role. It didn't really pull me in. Unfortunately, it's been years since I've enjoyed a sitcom with a laugh track. I've only seen one episode of Community, but it wasn't bad. I think it's something I'd watch if it wasn't airing against FlashForward tonight.

I KNEW that was Zoe, but my aunt said it wasn't! Oh, I love being right! "Hank" isn't so good...from the one episode I've seen, anyway. I've also only seen one episode of "Community" and it was amusing, though not laugh-out-loud funny. Yet? Perhaps.

Shows that definitely need to pick up viewership or face the axe soon include "Accidentally on Purpose," "Brothers", "Eastwick," "The Forgotten," "Melrose Place", and reality series "Shark Tank".

Haven't seen any of the above, but I'm okay with Eastwick failing because it frees up Jaime Ray Newman to return to Eureka for Season 4 (as Tess). I pegged The Forgotten as a quick to be canceled series as soon as I heard about it.

I'm fairly certain "The Forgotten" will be canceled soon, as well. It's a good idea, there are some points I like about it, but it doesn't seem to have that...spark. "Eastwick" started out sounding like it was going to be really good, but so far, it's not. Though perhaps it's one of those shows that takes a while to get going? I can't remember his name, but I don't like the rich guy that came to town... If done a LITTLE differently, I think it could be so good. But alas...

The most notable trend this season is that viewers don't want any more medical dramas with all three new hospital-themed shows "Mercy," "Three Rivers" and "Trauma" premiering to dismal numbers and unlikely to last more than a few weeks each. Existing medical hits "House" and "Grey's Anatomy" however have improved on drops from last year.

Amen. I had a bad feeling about three new medical dramas all trying to come in where there's no real void for them to fill. I have no idea about the quality of these new shows (as I haven't seen them), but I'm not surprised at all by the lack of viewers.

I remember one preview for "Mercy" looking a little interesting and "Trauma" looked like it might be good, but what is "Three Rivers"? I don't even remember. I don't even know when the new episodes of "House" are on, but I watch the re-runs when they're on. Though at this point, I don't know any clear back story. "Grey's Anatomy" was good in its first season, but after that, I couldn't care less if it was gone entirely. Oh, well. I don't have to watch it. Yay.

Several pre-existing shows aren't going too well with "Castle," "Cold Case," "Dollhouse," "Fringe," "Gary Unmarried," "Heroes," "Law & Order," "New Adventures of Old Christine," "Parks & Recreation," "Smallville" and "Til Death" all losing decent sized shares of their audience and have dropped to their lowest ratings yet. Renewals beyond this season look highly uncertain, and in some cases they may not last out the current season.

I'm sorry "Castle"... but you're airing against Monday Night Football. I watched you in the Spring, and I'll watch you again after the NFL regular season ends... if you're still around.

I haven't seen a whole lot of marketing for Dollhouse and Fringe, but I know the viewers they have really enjoy them and are pushing for them. I'm a little behind on both shows. Have to get caught up on DVD and Hulu.

I'm way behind on Heroes, too. So I can't really lobby for its continued existence. Pretty sure I've seen all of Season 1 and 2... and I'm tentative about the latter half of 2. Wish I had more money for DVD sets.

I at least give half my attention to "Castle" when it's on because it's on right after "Dancing With The Stars" and it's not horrible, just not...great. Nathan Fillion and his Castle is great, but the rest aren't so good. He's got a lot of weight on his shoulders there. I quit watching "Smallville" after the first or second season, I think. I've seen one episode of "Dollhouse", but since I came in somewhere that wasn't the beginning, I was lost, so until I can afford to catch up, it's a "bleh" to me. I so want to love it, though, because I'm a huge fan of Joss Whedon... I just couldn't be there for the beginning... I didn't watch more than the first couple "Heroes" episodes, so I didn't get addicted, though I might have if I had stayed with it. I've only seen a couple re-runs of "Cold Case", when I happen to keep the television on in the afternoons after watching "Las Vegas" re-runs on TNT. For the rest, as far as I'm concerned... Oh, well...

Other pre-existing shows however are holding steady or improving on their numbers meaning they'll not just last until May but are pretty certain to be be back next season. These include "90210," "American Dad," "The Big Bang Theory," "Bones," "Criminal Minds," all three "CSI" shows, "Desperate Housewives," "Family Guy," "Ghost Whisperer," "Gossip Girl," "How I Met Your Mother," "Law & Order: SVU," "Lie to Me," "Medium," "The Mentalist," "Numbers," "The Office," "One Tree Hill," "Private Practice," "The Simpsons," "Supernatural" and "Two And A Half Men".

"30 Rock" and "Ugly Betty" don't return until next week.

It's funny... out of that last bit, I think I only watch Family Guy and sometimes The Office (1 hr Wedding episode for Jim and Pam tonight).

Of COURSE "Bones" is on this list! "Bones" is awesome! I am SO glad they're back and going strong! Out of all of those, "Bones" is the only one I watch regularly, though I think I've finally caught on to "The Office". I had seen a few episodes before and I just didn't understand why it was so great, but the other night, there were several of them on in a row on TBS and I was laughing out loud...I was even rolling a couple times. And I saw most of tonight's (well, now Thursday night's) episode and it was cute. Though I realize I've now missed a lot... I'll happily be catching up, though. "Two and a Half Men" is cute and so is "How I Met Your Mother", but I don't watch them regularly. Don't ask me why not because I don't really know... I watch "Family Guy" re-runs and sometimes "Ghost Whisperer", but for the others...eh. "Desperate Housewives"? Gag me with a wooden spoon. I could do without any of the "Law & Order" shows, but they're better than "Desperate Housewives". "Ugly Betty" was always stupid and I never liked it. The rest of the shows either fall in that category or are just "eh".

Bless you if you have read all this. Bless you anyway, really. Anyway...
