The cartoon version was a masterpiece, as was the (very different) black and white live action version by Jean Cocteau all the way back in 1946. I never did understand what this version was supposed to add, other than money into Disney's coffers.
And while I obviously haven't seen it, I'm inclined to agree about the lameness of making their much-hyped gay character turn good at the end.
