I'm probably an atypical kind of Star Wars fan in the sense that my favourite stories - by far - aren't those of the original trilogy, nor obviously the prequel trilogy, but the KoTOR games. Which of course could never have existed without the trilogy and its worldbuilding, but still - they have a stronger plot, just as memorable characters and even greater thematic depth, if you ask me. No doubt part of that is simply because there's more space for a complex plot and a player in a RPG is more involved than a movie viewer, per definition.
So I guess I had a lot less nostalgia and affection for the old characters in TFA than most people in this thread, just for the universe they move in - and then it makes sense that I'm just as interested in new characters living in that universe as in the old ones.
So I'd be disappointed if Rey turns out to be a Skywalker relative, or if Luke takes the leading role again in the next movies - past time for some new blood, and past time for a female lead.
I agree with many of the observations others have made about the lack of originality in the plot and the silliness of the WMD of choice - the plot was entertaining enough and expertly paced, but we were given precious little reason to care about the WMD (oh no, it destroyed a planet full of people we hadn't seen for as much as a second prior to that moment!), even aside from its plausibility within the context of the story. The imitation of the A New Hope Death Star battle isn't nearly as interesting as the original - I'd almost say little more than filler inbetween the Rey/Han/Finn/Kylo Ren scenes.
Rey and Kylo Ren are really the main factors that will make or break the rest of the trilogy for me - their future, their mysterious pasts and how the two will intertwine. Perhaps the only audacious thing about the whole movie, that, because they'll have to fill in the blanks as they go along, and make viewers more fully appreciate the events of TFA along the way. I kind of feel like Kylo Ren has indeed chosen his path with his actions in that big dramatic moment - but I can't see what it is, yet, until I've seen more of the backstory.
As for best sci-fi movie in years - sorry, but Interstellar's boots are not that easily filled.
