That wasn't a complete tabula rasa and full exclusion of the SW books from the cannon, though. The post-ROTJ stuff went down the drain, as well as a lot of the older pre-ANH or inter-OT movies stories and backstories (Han's youth etc.) but a lot of the more recent EU from the prequel era and from the years leading to ANH have been re confirmed as cannon. And yup, they are back at publishing new "cannon" EU books set between ROTJ and TFA.... and I imagine that now that TFA is out and the "secrets" of the setting are in the open, they'll increase pace.
