I'd be able to tell, wouldn't I?
View original postJames Bond is fine the way he is. He doesn't need to be made into a black guy.
I don't think he "needs" anything. But imo, if the black actor could handle the character (smooth, charming, kinda slinky and physically able), I can't see myself objecting.
View original postAnd yes, I'd feel the same way if an established black character was changed into a white guy.
I would if I felt the character couldn't exist properly in the story, or that valuable plot points would be skewed. James Bond isn't like Lily Evans/Potter, who was supposed to have green-freakin'-eyes because it's a massive plot point!!! Or Murphy from Butcher's Dresden series who is supposed to look cherubic. He's supposed to be sexy, dangerous, intelligent, charming, etc - all things that could be accomplished regardless of race. I get that the books are about a white dude, but he didn't even have a cell phone. I think things have changed a bit.
View original postThen again, I tend to be a canon/continuity nazi, so I suppose people who are less invested in the franchise would have less of a problem with it. And the coninuity of the Bond series is already a hopeless snarl anyway.
I usually am, so I'm surprised I don't care about this. I can't even handle the Hobbit movies, even though I knew to just relax and watch.
Oops. I accidentally got involved in a discussion on whether James Bond could ever be black.

Meh. I would just view it as "something new." There have been a ton of Bonds.

The real question is why a tired franchise is squeezed for every last penny.

Might as well ask why the sky is blue.

I completely disagree - but maybe I'm not a typical Bond fan, if a fan at all.

Problem is, as I hear it, Austin Powers kind of ruined "spy comedy" for anyone else

Shrug. I have no problem with it- there have been plenty of men who played Bond. He's "British"
