It's not a very popular position, but I am so sick and tired of certain sites demanding (yes, as obnoxious as that) some kind of quota of more strong female characters in TV and film. I say: write great characters, period. Then cast the person who is best for the job. If they are black, gay or female, great. If they are male, hetero and white, also great. But the politically correct bullshit goes a little far recently.
