I saw it with friends, in 3D, which I thought was fairly good (but I rarely go to the movies so I would hardly know).
Anyway, I'm not familiar with the source material, other than to know that it's Japanese, which was enough to explain some of the things, such as why the mechanical suit spoke in Japanese, and why Emily Blunt's character was called "Full Metal Bitch," an allusion that would have made much more sense to a Japanese audience.
I thought most of the movie was good, though I wasn't a big fan of the ending. It seemed too abrupt, and left a lot unexplained about the mechanics of the time travel, and the Mimics themselves. But considering all that the movie crammed into its allotted time, I can hardly blame it for not also cramming in some world building. Overall, for a movie that had to show the same day repeat over and over, it did a very good job of keeping it fun, fresh, and including a variety of scenes.
But while that's all good, there simply isn't much more to it. It's fun, it's enjoyable, but that's all it is. So long as you go into it expecting a blockbuster, you will enjoy yourself, maybe even be pleasantly surprised. Go into it expecting something more sci-fi than blockbuster, and you likely won't fare as well.
Also, I couldn't help thinking that the concept would probably lend itself much better to an anime format rather than a movie. Especially the scenes with Blunt's character fighting Mimics with a sword looked odd, and unreal, but I imagine would have been very interesting to watch in anime form.
