I know you say you haven't seen the fast movies, but in those movies he was kinda bland and generic. In those movies he plays a character who had a bad childhood, but eventually becomes a good guy cop, who eventually breaks the law to protect his "family."

It is the other characters in the franchise that make the franchise interesting.
