I just thought I would mention it here briefly - I took my soon-to-be-five-year-old to see Disney's Frozen (in 2D, of course, since I had no desire to vomit half-digested popcorn all over the theatre 15 minutes into the screening).
The story is a very liberal retelling of Andersen's The Snow Queen, set in a Norway-inspired kingdom called Arendelle. There are two princesses, and the older one (Elsa) has magical snow powers. One day, while playing with her younger sister, Anna, Elsa "zaps" Anna in the head with snow and their parents have to take Anna to the trolls to heal her. They wipe her memory of everything relating to the magic, and Elsa then refuses to leave her room to play with Anna after that as her powers run wild inside her room, which is something like a freezer. Then the parents die when their ship sinks in a storm, leaving the two girls alone.
The rest of the story follows the normal Disney traditions in many ways, though there are some interesting changes - the villains are more subtle and of course even though Elsa is portrayed as a villainess herself, it's clear that she isn't really bad. It's got some wonderful humor, like the talking snowman who wishes he could see summer but doesn't realize what happens to snow in summer.
I think that it compares well to Tangled. If you liked that movie, you'll probably like this one. I thought it was better than Brave, which was the previous princess movie. My daughter wanted to watch it again and has already asked for the dolls for her birthday (which is a week before Christmas - that way she doesn't have to wait an extra week for them). She also loved the fact there were two sisters, since her little sister is about six months old now, but I think that most girls will like the movie. I can't really judge what little boys might think but there seemed to be plenty of them in the theatre as well. Some silly kids even cried near the end, which I found amusingly bizarre. My daughter didn't understand that either - "it's just a cartoon," she said.
I wonder if my daughter would like Thor 2...then I might actually get to see it in the theatre.
