I have a feeling this could be one of those cases where the movie is better, or in any case not worse, than the book (which did not, on the whole, live up to its predecessors's promise, I thought).
View original postThe great news is: this time the games work too. By adding more characters that function as much more than victims and raising the stakes for Katniss and Peeta, the second half of the film is exciting, surprising, sometimes even wonderfully unpleasant, as should be. The new additions to the cast work great, especially Jena Malone, Sam Clafin and Philip Seymour Hoffman in roles that are not that easy to figure out. While Hutcherson manages to give his character much more heart and depth this time, this is still Lawrence's show, once again proving how she already is the leading lady of her acting generation.
That she is, though this is hardly the kind of movie where she most shows it... Philip Seymour Hoffman is definitely an exciting addition to the cast.
View original postTop notch special effects, a much more spectacular setting for the game arena and unexpected plot twists make for a breath-taking finale, that ends as abruptly as imaginable. That robs the film some of its standalone merit, but leaves you wanting more and that soon.
Have to say, ever since I read the books (after having seen the first movie), it's been the third movie that I wanted to see - although I believe they said something about cutting it in two? So third and fourth, then. I want to see if they dare to be as brutal, ruthless and generally over the top as the book is.

Yep - saw it now, and going to stick with "the movie is better than the book".

After seeing it, I remain convinced that the series is 2.5 books too long.

Your assessment of the last two books is surprisingly accurate for someone who hasn't read them.
