In the Golden Age when all the stories were heavily inspired by pulp detective and crime stories both characters readily dealt hefty physical damage to people. In the Comics Code era and beyond both cleaned up their acts.

Superman has killed a bunch of prisoners in the Phantom Zone and killed Doomsday (in the same fight that Superman died). Batman just killed Darkseid.
