Earth is not doing so well. After a devastating war with space invaders that destroyed the moon it is in ruins, even though the war was won. Only tech teams remain above the surface to repair drones and prepare the mother ship in orbit for the great escape into space, while fighting back occasional attacks by the last alien marauders. Jack (Tom Cruise, proving once again that he can easily carry a film as leading man) and Victoria (excellent: Andrea Riseborough) are an efficient tech team.
The early scenes of decayed buildings and barren landscapes are beautifully contrasted by the cold, clean look of their apartment and the fantastic jet fighter and drones technology. To say more about the plot would already be spoiling it, even if the trailer already gave away a little more than that. Fact is, the story is smart enough and does take a few turns on its way, spicing things up with pretty spectacular action scenes every now and then.
Thankfully, the film is more than a breathtaking feast of visuals and even though most of its Sci-Fi aspects have been used before, the mix feels fresh and original enough in this new setting. One of its biggest assets is the oddly calm yet menacing atmosphere, supported by M83's great soundtrack score. Of course it helps that you care for the characters and their fate when things get particularly dire in the last act.
The result is a beautifully filmed and really well done Sci-Fi adventure with the expected humane message. Even if it doesn't reinvent the wheel, it is highly entertaining and its images stay with you long after the end credits.
