I don't think I've ever stopped watching a tv show that I was seriously into and watching continuously. Sometimes before I would stop watching when my schedule didn't align with the television's, or when the show dropped in quality so noticeably as to become unwatchable. But this case is different, because I actually really like Farscape, it comes highly recommended, and from what I hear things only get better. Yet despite it all, I've stopped watching it twice now, both times during the same still unfinished episode. The episode is 4x05, "Promises."
This is the reunion episode, where Crichton and the others finally get back to Moya, and discover it inhabited by Scorpius and Aeryn. Now, I love pretty much all the characters on the show. I love Aeryn, I love Crichton, I love Aeryn and Crichton, I love Scorpius, and so on, you get the idea. But this episode manages to just rub me the wrong way in practically every scene. I find Aeryn completely out of character in this episode, and pointlessly obstinate, as though she knows that she's in a tv show and so can't behave rationally and make things simple. Scorpius being added to the mix would be an interesting element, if not for the Scorpius already in Crichton's head in the shape of Harvey. Harvey whom I love. And yet Crichton somehow comes to the decision to trust the real Scorpius to inject him once again with something that will remove Harvey. Yeah, I guess Harvey had to go despite being hilarious and entertaining and useful, but why in this way? Why trust the least trustworthy person on the ship?
It sounds petty now that I've put it into words, but as I said, nearly everything in this episode just rubs me the wrong way. So I quit watching, the first time when I got fed up with Aeryn. Then, after cooling off for over a day, I tried again and stopped once more not ten minutes later when it was Crichton's turn to be out of character. I'm clearly in the minority, since as far as I can tell reviews for the episode were very positive, but I don't know if I'll even bother watching the rest of the show now.
So to those of you that have watched Farscape, how did you feel about this episode and part of the storyline? To those of you that haven't (and those that have too), have you ever dropped a tv show because you got fed up with something on it? What was it? Did you ever go back and keep watching later?
