You make valid points but in your logic you fail to include two pieces of information:

1) We don't know the names of any of the pilots that stayed on the outside so we can only conclude that they weren't important enough to get to know because they sucked. :P

2) Han Solo piloted the MF through all the outside stuff and blasted the fighter on Luke's tail just before Luke shot the torpedos that destroyed the death star. Han came from "outside" to save the day after Luke was in the trench for an eternity and the MF is a MFing big ship so an X-Wing should have been able to do it too.
