Are we talking about Azog here the one who killed Thorin Oakenshield's grandfather, Thrór? The same Thrór who after gotten kicked out as king under the mountain by the dragon Smaug, bequeathed one of the dwarf magic rings to his son Thráin II (Thorin Oakenshield's father). After losing the lonely mountain Thorin's grandfather decided to try to retake Moria. (A foolhardy task for there was still the balrog.)
Of course Thror died a bloody death, he was captured and tortured by Azog the Orc, the killed, and then his body was desecrated. Thror's death then caused a massive war between the orcs and the dwarves. In this war Thorin's father loses an eye and Thorin becomes a warrior and gains the title Oakenshield since his shield was destroyed Thorin just cut down a tree and used a branch to defend himself.
All this is in the film.
Personally, I couldn't remember if there was an orc nemesis in the Hobbit book, nor have I read any appendices, so that didn't bother me much. Only that he was CGI instead of prosthetics.

I think two words have killed this movie for me: "orc nemesis"

There actually was in Tolkein's mind, it is just contained in a different book. *NM*

If you haven't seen it, you really can't judge. It's not a big deal

I hated it, but I know I will be in the minority.

I think any of those changes need to be viewed with the question, "Did it make a better movie?"

Radagast? Bunny Sledge? Archrival Azog? The whole goblin cavern scene? It's a massacre alright. *NM*
