So it is unorthodox, but as long as Superman himself completely rejects this notion, it shouldn't be intrinsically problematic...
I imagine they could be setting it up so that Superman's faith in people has to overcome the fears he was taught as a child, which as far as 'attempts to make Superman more vulnerable' goes actually far less stupid than most, and if done well, might justify making this movie an origin story.
