Having to make a fresh start could be a good thing. Nate Send a noteboard - 30/10/2012 10:00:17 PM
It would at least let them avoid the trap the books have fallen into, which is that no matter what happens to everyone else, nothing major can happen to the movie characters. They're all pushing 70 in the book chronology, I think, and still involved in every galaxy-shaking event.

They could try to recast the roles and move forward. I'd personally kind of enjoy that, but I'm willing to bet I'm a minority. It would certainly be different, but people are still too attached to the original actors. They could try to bring those original actors back much older and use them to pass the story on to a new generation, but that too could be weird, because none of them look quite the same. Harrison Ford has at least aged gracefully.

But I think that with the right script, they could start fresh at some point in the future when all the movie characters have died. Use their grandchildren or great-grandchildren so you don't even mess with the book chronology. Try to tell a new story without the baggage of the past. That would be my preferred direction. As with everything, it depends on the quality of the script and the directing and the acting. There's certainly no rule saying that a Star Wars story has to suck just because it doesn't have the classic characters. Create some compelling new characters, write a good story for it, and you're golden.

Of course, it could also be terrible. But I guess it can't hurt to hope for the best. Marvel and Pixar are both owned by Disney and are doing okay in the story creation department.
