Bronn doesn't really betray Tyrion. When Tyrion asks him to fight Gregor for him, Bronn wants to because he likes Tyrion, but ultimately values his head more. Tyrion accepts that and doesn't blame him for it, pondering he might have done the same in Bronn's place.
And whilst Bronn might not be in Tyrion's employ afterwards, given the enthusiasm with which he screws over Cersei's plans for the Stokeworths, he may as well have done. I suspect Bronn and the mountain tribes (who in the books took up refuge in the Kingswood after the battle of the Blackwater) will have a role to play in Tyrion (and Dany's) return to Westeros.

The final version of the episode was apparently significantly rewritten by the producers.

Yeah, but he didn't even come into the equation in the books. He was a mere playing piece

I liked this episode, but the battles were confusing and kind of a let-down.

I haven't read the books, and the whole ending was quite a confusing sequence.

But we, as viewers, are not soldiers; we're more like historians. Or gods, if you prefer.

You're right, but I simply saw it as a way to work with their tight budget
