I'd second The Hour DomA Send a noteboard - 06/05/2012 06:46:23 PM
though all are British and hence rather short - perhaps better described as mini-series than real series. I guess my longer American shows are all SF/F. :P

Sherlock - to some extent it's a crime of the week thing, but there is overarching story to some extent too.

The Hour - great show about the BBC in 1956, journalists making a new kind of news program at the time of the Suez Crisis (I believe they intend to make a second series, but the first one has a self-contained story)

The Crimson Petal and the White - mini-series based on the (superb, I might add) novel of the same name by Michel Faber, about a Victorian prostitute who wants to make a better life for herself

The other shows I would have suggested just don't fit the "no longer ongoing" criteria (like Mad Men, Treme or the Borgias on which people from the Wire work, or Boardwalk Empire).

Personally I disliked The Shield as much as I liked The Wire, and gave up on Breaking Bad toward the end of season 1 (because it had bored me since episode 1).
