though all are British and hence rather short - perhaps better described as mini-series than real series. I guess my longer American shows are all SF/F.
Sherlock - to some extent it's a crime of the week thing, but there is overarching story to some extent too.
The Hour - great show about the BBC in 1956, journalists making a new kind of news program at the time of the Suez Crisis (I believe they intend to make a second series, but the first one has a self-contained story)
The Crimson Petal and the White - mini-series based on the (superb, I might add) novel of the same name by Michel Faber, about a Victorian prostitute who wants to make a better life for herself

i love the shield, too... you could try six feet under. it's dramatic and very beautiful.
