Re: Stop using female as a noun! dacole Send a noteboard - 05/04/2012 02:18:47 PM
You keep doing it! Female character is fine, female human is fine, but female just on its own? xx(

Also the movie is quite worthwhile. You should see it.

Once again, I thing hunger games is feminist because it doesn't have any stereotypes of how a woman should be and act, and absolutely no emphasis is places on her gender. There are very few such movies!

That's fine. I have no problem whatsoever with this statement.

And just to explain my statements above:
I fear the term feminist carries such a negative connotation sometimes because it seems that it's out to tell people what they are allowed to think about females.
If I want to watch a film where the female is nothing more than the pretty, dumb eye candy next to the hero, I'll do that. Because, ya know, such females exist. That's not the same as telling every woman out there to do or be the same. And then after I turn this film off I watch Ripley kick alien ass as good as any male character could have. Just don't tell me I have to decide, can't have both or that every film will have a Katniss now. Females are pretty and are ugly, they are smart and dumb. Just like movie characters. And just like guys.

The teenage guys in the row behind us were obviously disappointed Lawrence didn't get naked in the film. And they laughed while the little girl died. Idiots, obviously. But proof that people went to see this film for all kinds of reasons and one should not read too much into it either way.

Seriously this is the kind of radical feminism that is ridiculous. Female the word is in now way derogatory simply on its own can it be used that way...sure but so can any other descriptive term..."Well he's just male so you can't expect him to understand". Feminism in its best form is the radical notion that women are people...and that it is it. You go beyond that and you are getting into crazy town. I wouldn't call this a feminist movie because I like to think we have gotten past the idea that women can't be physically strong and active. But seeing a physically strong and outdoorsy female character is certainly always nice there are not enough of them. Anything that breaks the crazy princess stereotype is a good thing.
