Why don't you think the Hunger Games are feminist? Vivien Send a noteboard - 03/04/2012 11:17:53 PM
It seems like the problem here is definitions. If one associates feminism with annoying and preachy, that's kind of depressing.

Again, the article is garbage. Pretty much everything in it is garbage. You could imagine it to be true? :D Come on you have to admit that looking at this from the outside:

you have a situation where you admit that you're not familiar with the source material, then there's an article written by someone unfamiliar with the source material, and people who are familiar with the source material say that the article is garbage and... your conclusion is "I can imagine it to be true". This is when we laugh.

As it is, I have absolutely no idea. However, though I don't think the Hunger Games are feminist, wouldn't particularly care about it if they were (like ironclad said, it's only annoying if it's preachy, and even then it isn't annoying because it's feminism, but because it's something that is preachy), I have to say that all the people I saw talking and raving about it on facebook were female. Is that a coincidence? Perhaps, but probably not.

Ultimately it hinges on whether or not Katniss is an active character or not. I wasn't able to finish the whole article, because I lost interest in it. But from what I gathered, the writer thought she was as passive as Cinderella, merely responding to events (unsuccessfully), until further events took matters out of her hands. I don't know if that's true or not, and the Cinderella comparison is definitely hyperbole, but I could imagine it being true. It seems like just the sort of thing to keep the main character from making polarizing decisions that would render her a murky gray.
