As far as the actual book series goes, it was weird for me how they would alternate between being pretty good and completely terrible. It was literally one then the other, for me. I would finish one that was pretty good, then the next one would be absolute drivel and I would think I wasn't going to bother with the next one. Then I'd pick it up anyway, and it would be pretty good again! WTF?! I have never in my life read a series that alternated so specifically between good and bad like that.
Has nothing to do with the tv series, really, unless you stop to think that when you hated every second book the tv series probably isn't going to be Emmy material either.
