I agree that a film/show/book etc. should always obey it's internal logic

But I believe that this is the case here. With the exception of Banner/Hulk all the other Avengers have shown the ability to work with others. Iron Man with War Machine and Pepper (he was also willing to join the Avengers Initiative, it was Furey who didn't want him), Captain America with the Howling Commandos, Thor with his companions from Asgard and Black Widow & Hawkeye are already members of SHIELD and have been seen to take orders.
Now no doubt there will be conflict between them over who gets to be in charge (and between Thor and the others as he are fighting his brother), but I think it's been clearly shown that they can all work with others (with the possible exception of Banner/Hulk and it doesn't exactly look like he voulnteers).

It's not as if this movie franchise came up with the idea of teaming them up

Like I said, I never read the comics. But I'm totally fine with blaming them for the crossover

I was under the impression that several of them who are not Thor don't, in fact, have powers

Having read the comics in the 80s I've been waiting a long time for this to happen.

I had no problem with League or Watchmen. Well, not "no" problem... but not that much.
