I'll see it but expect it to bomb ironclad Send a noteboard - 25/02/2012 01:35:36 AM
There are basically 2 theories.

1) People who think it should have "of Mars" in the title are so cheesed about it that they think no one will want to go see it because of that omission.

They estranged the nerds by that without getting the average Joe (or females) on board because this title doesn't tell you shit.

2) Remember that sandy Coliseum scene in Attack of the Clones? The preview makes the film look like a two hour long re-imagining of that scene, devoid of any plot, character motivation or reasonable explanation. It says "Here's a human being simply beating the shit out of a variety of CGI creatures. Now, give us your money."

True. I'm in. I loved the last 45 minutes of AOTC.

Are you going to see John Carter? Theatrically? Netflix? Torrent?

I'll probably see it opening weekend unless the first few tomatoes are terribly rotten. There just aren't enough swashbuckling adventures in space lately and it's probably my favorite genre.

You can also feel free to be one of those people who, instead of discussing it or theorizing on why it might flop, angrily discusses why box office take is stupid and doesn't matter. That's cool, too.

The box office matters to the studios. I don't see this film making profit unless everyone leaves the cinema smitten by it and tells the world about it. I didn't expect Avatar to do that well either, but at least it had the name Cameron attached and it got that "have to see it" vibe very quickly.
JC has a relatively unknown leading man, great actors hidden behind CGI and a director who delivered excellent Pixar films. I fear that's not enough.

You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling.

John Carter. It's being declared a flop weeks ahead of it's premiere. - 25/02/2012 12:49:00 AM 909 Views
