you are consigning Star Wars, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Ghostbusters, the LotR trilogy, the Batman films, Tai Chi master, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Doctor Zhivago, Con Air, Leon, The Fifth Element, all Deadly Weapon films, the Avengers films... I could go on... to the genre.
All depending on the female audience in question, of course.
Not to mention all films that have ever won best picture, I think.
That's a mighty random (but pretty great) list of films. All those are a romance? (as opposed to having romantic aspects - yes, there are love interests in Ghostbusters, but come on). And all of those made you cry? Con Air, really?

They are not all "romance" (whatever you understand by the term -- romantic comedies?), but they all have romance elements which are significant to the plot, I think. And most of those have made me cry (LotR for slightly different reasons). Including Con Air (well, I teared up, anyway). I cry easily.
We seem to perceive such things very differently. I had to think hard about what romantic aspects were in Lethal Weapon, Con Air, Batman or the 5th Element. I thought their origin was more like "We have a kickass script here, guys, but we gotta add someone Gibson can kiss so a few ladies come see the film too!"
I am not saying the romance is the primary force of the films, merely that by the definition you offered, they fit.
Yes, I am generalizing. The studios do too, because they have the numbers to back it up

Don't get me started. I don't have time.
Come on? That is just my point. Come on. Casablanca? Come on.
You know damn well how I meant my definition and that it's rather accurate

Not really. I find the whole concept of "chick flicks" problematic.
Problematic that they exist or that I call them what they are?
Both.
I am not saying Casablanca is from the same pile as Pretty Woman or most J.Lo films but, without having seen it mind you, it still seems to attract more females than male viewers. I'll stick to that for now.
I am angry now, so I will stop commenting.
