Maybe you've been watching the wrong sort of anime, lol? Either that, or I've gotten so acclimatized to it that I no longer notice.
I've always really wanted to like Anime, so I've tried most of the commonly recommended ones. I don't remember them all, but things like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, FMA, and most of the ones that air on American TV. There have been quite a few more over the years but I'm drawing a blank. Anyway, they're not all over the top in the same way, but every last one of them has elements that are completely foreign to me, that I just can't appreciate. Things that I don't understand.
Of those, I've seen Cowboy Bebop and more recently FMA, so yeah, if FMA isn't your thing then it's unlikely you'll find less over the top animes. From what I understand, the over the top stuff and flying colors are due to the manga format. They're an effective way of showing emotion in a still image. It's just that most animes are kinda...meh... quality, so they forget that they're moving animated shows, and therefore not as confined as mangas are. Still, other than the flying colors, I always enjoyed FMA's style, like how the characters would look when they're feeling kinda ashamed or scared, or how Edward would have his "soul" coming out of him after Winry hits him or something, lol.
Also, digimon was, is, and always will be awesome.
Yes, yes you are correct. Although I suspect my enjoyment of it is nothing but pure nostalgia.
Definitely. But nostalgia is a perfectly good reason for watching and enjoying something again.
