The man wasn't a Mary-Sue, he was just...dull. The female protagonist showed him (and everyone else) up at everything and kicked everybody's ass, took down all the bad guys practically single-handedly and punished everyone who wronged her and was basically just a total unstoppable badass who had it all figured out. Again, not that I minded much in this case, since the rest of the movie (including the other characters) were boring as hell, so she at least livened things up a bit.
In the book she does kick ass and generally outwit people, I guess, but what with her traumatized past, her being a social outcast and barely having any friends other than Mikael, I really don't see how she's a Mary Sue. I can't imagine they just glossed over all those things in the movie, either - because as I said, she's what makes those books worthwhile.
