I think they were placing numerous guns on mantelpieces throughout this episode (the dummy hanging in the apartment, mentioning the homeless network, the possibility of a Sherlock mask, the asking Molly for help, choosing the location, the trailer full of bin bags, etc.) I'm sure some are red herrings, but I imagine that there are enough genuine clues for them to plausibly explain how he did it.
I'm hoping so. It really needs to have had Sherlock out thought Moriarty, not just get lucky.
