Being able to take a punch from girls is different then being able to take a punch from a guy. I have been hit by girls and hit urts but I have never been staggered by a punch from a girl, not even close. Girl punches hurt, guy punches can't knock you unconscious and even average guys can punch hard enough to stun you and make you see stars.
Strength does matter and most men are stronger than even girls who work out. Guys are not just a little stronger than girls we are lot stronger than girls and faster. Look that 100m, the women's world record is slower than the Texas High School boy's record. I can't seem to find a chart this morning (damn wiki balckout) but I have seen charts that put the overlap in lifting capacity between men and women of equal age to about 10%. So the strongest 10% of the women are stronger than the bottom 10% of the men. Which of course means that 90% of the men are stronger than almost all of the women. Yeah there are a few freaks out there who are massive but I would be willing to bet they take male hormones to get that big.

Regular but fit guys still wouldn't stand a chance, I guess.

Haywire may not be the best example

So: Action roles should have bigger women.

Actually, Buffy is worse because it implies women need magic to be useful.

Joyce comes to mind. And Tara - she hardly ever uses her magic. Oh, and Darla.

I really doubt the outfit did much to make Xena look big.

Lucy Lawless is pretty much Amazonian.

It's true that she's not as tiny as others.

"Not as tiny as the others" is about the best you can say for her.

Indeed. See for example, any Robin Hood made in the last 20 years. Maid Marian HAS to fight. *NM*

She is some kind of super hero in super hero movie, is't she? *NM*

I don't think she's technically supposed to have super powers.

I thought Sarah Connor in T2: Judgment Day was a realistic portrayal of the action heroine.

It just depends on how much you're willing to accept.

You're nitpicking and drawing an arbitrary line. All action is ridiculously unbelievable. *NM*

Maybe. I just feel there's a distinction between "one in a million" and "impossible."
