DOCTOR WHO is one of the purest SF concepts and ideas in existence, the ability to go anywhere and do anything. When the show fulfils the full potential of that premise - which is not as often as it should - the results are very good. However, the results are usually more variable.
The problem is that WHO is hamstrung by its remit to appeal to both adults and kids. If it didn't have to appeal to the children and could cut loose with more adult stories, I think it could be a vehicle for very interesting, hard SF stories (as a few of the adult-oriented New Adventures novels are). But the audience issue does limit what the show can do most of the time.

"Doctor Who has some great ideas, but it also has the Daleks...

I can't take Dr. Who seriously, and I think that's why I've never cared for it. *NM*

It didn't, but that's why *I* can't really get into it. I didn't like SG-1 either, tho it tried.
