For current shows: (due to evolving feelings as the show changes)

Honorable Mention: House MD (fading fast), Homeland (rising fast), Dexter, Game of Thrones, Supernatural, Person of Interest

For me:

1) The Wire
2) TIE: Battlestar Galactica (RDM) and Babylon 5
3) ------
4) Spooks (aka MI-5)
5) Stargate Universe

Honorable Mentions: The Sopranos, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Game of Thrones, Weeds, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Stargate: SG1, Stargate Atlantis, Misfits. ETA: The West Wing as an honorable mention.

The Wire is simply the best show EVER on television. PERIOD.



I could not get past the first two episodes of Stargate, or watch more than the miniseries that kicked off the new BSG (is that what you mean by RDM? ). The former was so crappy with it's production values that it was a distraction, while the latter was so pretentious and into itself, particularly in the 9-11 navel-gazing attitude that way too many people had back when that started, that I couldn't be bothered. But the Wire was really good.
