Because it would take up space in his brain and He'd take time to unlearn that information if he could. I think it is fair to compare a lot of these characters to him. But they always get something way off.
I think he was pulling Watson's leg at that.
He said he would not want to learn something that could not be relevant to his profession, but everything is potentially relevant.
I agree completely. He was making an analogy for Watson about the intensity he liked to focus on his own subjects. I have people like this in my family. They are very focused. Not wanting to learn things that do not interest them. I have a brother in law who doesn't drive because it is not worth his time to learn. He just isn't interested. He runs his own computer software company. He is also Aspergers. These very focused and single minded people can seem quite helpless and clueless when faced with ordinary things we would think everyone should know. My 11 yr old can tell you all day about his interests, but I can't get him to memorize our phone number and home address. I don't think these TV tropes are all that off from these types of individuals. I suppose because I have people I love who are like this, I find them endearing and charming most of the time.

A TV trope that really bugs me: culturally ignorant geniuses.

It's not about them being expert in everything. Just not devoid of basic pop culture knowledge.
