I thought he was the good guy. I hate practically everyone else though. I hate everyone for torturing and killing Mason, who was definitely a good guy. I really liked season 1, but liked season 2 a lot less and I'm not that invested in this show anymore. It bothers me that the supposed heroes view human life so callously. And it's not "means justify ends" callous either- (that's more along the lines of Uncle John) it's just self interested callousness to the extreme.
I had that problem with the first season, and I think part of the reason I am enjoying the second is I have totally let go and am now just enjoying it for the soap-opera-esque qualities and plot twists. Elena has been so stupid and the brothers so inexplicably under her spell that you kind of have to give up all expectations reasonable verisimilitude. In other words, treat it like a CW network show: teen-targeted soap opera.
