Where's the fun in only arguing one side? :p Nate Send a noteboard - 14/09/2011 11:10:05 PM
Yes. So do I. As I just argued to Dom. The reason why Valkyrie is a more dubious case is that it's not so much a "classic story" as it is a part of recent German history (not as recent as some things that people already care far less about, true, but then there are many reasons why WW2 remains "recent" for a good while). And then there's Tom Cruise, a believer of a rather absurd cult that Germany in particular already has issues with anyhow, and a man whose motivation for making this movie was, as I recall, "as a kid I always fantasized about killing Hitler".

Is it fair to say, then, that your issues with the film are more about the many incidentals and circumstances surrounding it than about the actual content that's on the screen? If you watched the movie knowing nothing about Tom Cruise or the director or the controversy about doing that sort of portrayal of 60-year-old German history, would you still dislike it?

Also, there's the argument that even though Stauffenberg is a very German icon, his story is utterly wound up in the overall history of WWII, which is of massive historical interest to people from nations throughout the world, including America.
