Eh, some people are just too keen on catching some detail that is wrong so they can feel smart.
Well yes, that is some of it.
It seems plenty authentic to me, at least. Of course I'm neither British nor old enough to have memories of the fifties, but still.
I am British but is is authentic enough for me as well having not bee alive in the 50s. While some of it is people just liking picking holes to show off, some of it seems the sort of thing that would be reasonable to annoy people who are familiar with the 50s
Seems like six episodes will work well for the amount of plot there is, I have no complaints about the pacing... but it's true that with such a good concept and good characters, they could just have written a more extensive plot. Or make a second series as you say - one can't help but think Bel and Freddie will end up together eventually, but it would feel rushed indeed if they did so in episode six. And there's certainly more potential in Lix, in Bel's mother, and various other secondary characters.
I thought the pacing was good for the first three episodes, the last couple have felt a bit rushed to me and haven't left quite enough time to dwell on what has happened before it has moved on. So far I think the last two should have been spread over 3 ideally.
I'm actually quite torn on the characters, I'd like to see more of Lix and Clarence in particular (though all the main backing characters are very good) but I'm not sure if part of the reason they are so good is because they've left me wanting more rather than fleshing them out further.
Of course, a second series would have to find some other political events to run in the background, and I can't think of much in the fifties after Suez that would qualify...
Yes though they could probably cover the beginning of the end of the African colonies perhaps but it would be an anti climax, plus the mystery/ spy storyline will be played out really - it is really looks like it is set up to end with the close of the next episode.
