I didn't expect Cap to hold up to the fun and spectacular levels Thor and X-Men FC raised, but in the end, it actually does.
I was particularly worried about too much flag-waving, blind patriotism, "die for your country, son"-crap, but there is none of that. Cap joins the army because he doesn't like bullies, simple as that. How refreshing! The writers nailed Cap, making him the character I used to love in the comic books.
Sure, there are a couple of cheesy or overly heroic scenes later on anyway, but they are all countered with a great sense of humor. Tommy Lee Jones and Stanley Tucci get the best lines here, delivering two of the most outstanding performances in a well-picked cast down to the smallest roles. Hugo Weaving makes for a really coll Red Skull, too.
What's also refreshing is the old fashioned way this film is shot. There are no shaky handy cams or extreme camera angles, it's traditional adventure story telling at its best. There's even a certain Indiana Jones feeling to several scenes, also thanks to Alan Silvestris soundtrack, and what a greater compliment could you make an adventure film?
The action scenes are fun, the (weak Steve) special effects outstanding, everyone involved noticeably had fun making this film and that shows.

Fans of the Avengers should stay through the end credits for a treat, of course. The worst thing to say about the film is that 3D is hardly noticeable and not worth the extra money.
