And didn't his sacrifice somehow make it easier to kill the snake or something? I think I remember his death having more meaning the book, if I am not mistaken.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but Snape sacrifices himself in the book to convince Voldemort that by killing him he's removing the last obstacle to the power of the elder wand, and will thus be invincible. That's why Voldemort no longer felt it necessary to protect the Nagini-horcrux at that point, his crucial mistake. Snape gave up his life (instead for instance of half-lying to him that he didn't disarm Dumbledore but doesn't know who did etc.) so Voldermort would throw caution to the wind, thus buying perhaps the only chance for Harry to destroy the then overprotected Nagini and face a Voldemort unaware he isn't invincible.
You're remembering this incorrectly, but it did do those things you say. Voldemort was convinced that once Snape died the Elder Wand would truly be his, but it was not Snape's plan to die. He didn't foresee that Voldemort would think this way. That made Snape's death even sadder, because he didn't need to die, at all. His only goal was to tell Harry what he needed to know. He intended to do this when he "captured" Harry in the castle, but McGonagall was there.

The books are more coherent, more humourous, and more complex, to sum it up.
